I strongly believed that if my art was good enough, people would find me. I bet my art career on it.
I was wrong, and it cost me. If you believe the same thing right now, I'm about to disagree with you, not because wanting to be discovered is bad, but because I already ran that experiment and lost.
They won't.
Likes aren't leads. Followers aren't buyers. A big audience doesn't equal a successful business. And I have proof, not just an opinion.
I once met a man running a Facebook group with 300,000 members. I asked how many had actually bought from him.
Three hundred.
That was his real audience. Not 300,000.
Three hundred.
If you think that's insane, good, because you can see the trap everyone else is still walking into: chasing the 300,000 while ignoring the 300 who will actually pay.
So What Do You Do Instead of Chasing Followers?
You get potential buyers off of social media and onto a list you control; one you own outright, that no algorithm can ever take from you.
But people won't hand over their email just because you ask. You have to offer something they actually want. That's the part almost nobody does right.
I Learned This the Hard Way
Some months ago, I decided to work as a commercial artist. I'd heard the phrase "build it and they will come," so I built it.
They didn't come.
I went broke.
I had to ask my family for help just to keep going. That's how expensive that piece of folk wisdom turned out to be.
Shortly after that, I spoke with a coach from the Tony Robbins organization, and it hit me: I already knew how to market. How to create offers, attract attention, build lists. I'd just stopped doing it, I was trying to sell art to Facebook friends and assumed that was enough.
It wasn't.
I Wasn't Starting From Zero - And Neither Are You
I've spent roughly 28 years in writing and online marketing. I've published more than 1,000 articles in magazines around the world, worked with some of the best software companies in the industry, created products, built lists, run joint ventures, and sold online.
One joint venture sold more than 11,000 copies of a book I wrote. I earned over $90,000 from it, and I built a targeted list of 600 buyers.
And yet when I got into art, I forgot all of it.
I made the same mistake ad everyone else. I chased likes and follows. It was an expensive lesson to learn.
You probably have more to offer than you realize.
Most people are too close to their own work to see its value. You assume everyone already knows what you know. They don't.
That realization is what led me to create "The Five Pillars of Online Marketing."
This program contains everything I know about how to build a business online.
Here's how it works.
Pillar #1: Build a list of qualified buyers Not followers. Not likes. Not freebie seekers, the people who want to hear what you have to say because they know they'll get real value.
There are two ways to build a list:
A lead magnet / opt-in page. You offer something free or low-cost, they hand over their email, they receive the offer and they're on your list.
A sales page. You sell a product or service, and everyone who buys is added to your customer list and follow-up sequence.
Most people stop there and think any list is a good list. It isn't. Size matters far less than who's actually on it, and that comes down entirely to what you used to attract them.
Here's an example of a bad lead magnet: "The 10 Secrets Every Internet Marketer Needs to Know."
It sounds great but it will attract the tire kickers, the looky-loo's and people without money .
Here's a lead magnet designed to attract buyers. "How Top Affiliate Marketers Earn $5–20K a Month with YouTube Ads." That instantly attracts top affiliates who want to earn high commissions. And they know YouTube ads cost money. These people are far more likely to buy your offers - and that's what you want.
Your lead magnet has to solve a specific problem, ideally the number one pain point of your prospect. Do that right, and you will make sales.
And once they're on your list, you can sell related products, memberships, affiliate offers, or anything new you create. You stop renting audiences from platforms that can change their algorithm overnight. With a list YOU own the relationship.
Pillar #2: Podcasting Appear on shows that reach people interested in your topics.
Deliver real value, demonstrate expertise, and offer a lead magnet built for that audience. Build relationships with hosts. Do it right, and that will lead to referrals, joint ventures, and a bigger list.
It's said, "the money is in the list." I'll take that one step further: the money is in the list "if they're qualified buyers."
Pillar #3: Professional speaking Stages, live or virtual, will allow you demonstrate expertise in a way a post never can.
You can generate income from the engagement itself, and build the leads and credibility that feed everything else.
You don't need fame. You need to be known by the right people.
Pillar #4: Joint ventures Partner with someone who already has the audience you want, structured so it benefits both of you.
That's the exact leverage that sold 11,000 books. Choose partners carefully and structure the deal properly. I learned that one the hard way, too.
Pillar #5: Guest posting Write for the right sites to reach someone else's audience.
Use the author's resource box to send interested readers to your offer or lead magnet.
You're not writing for a byline, you're building your own list of qualified people.
Why this feels different from everything else you've tried.
You've probably already tried "post more" and "be consistent" and "just be yourself."
This isn't that.
Every other piece of advice you've been fed asks you to rent attention from a platform and hope.
These five pillars all point at the same asset: a list you own, made up of people who've already shown they'll pay.
There's a Catch
None of this works if you don't put in the effort.
I didn't start with a big audience, podcast hosts, speaking slots, or partners lined up. I learned, wrote, contacted people, tested, and kept going.
I can hand you the framework and nearly three decades of hard-earned lessons, but I cannot do the work for you.
If you're looking for an effortless overnight fix, this isn't it.
If you're willing to learn, implement, and take responsibility, this method is for you.
You Don't Need a Fortune to Start
If you have capital, great. You can hire, advertise, and test various methods.
If you don't have capital, use what you already have: knowledge, skills, experience, and relationships.
That's what I'm doing.
Why I Built This
I organized roughly 28 years of experience into a course for business owners, entrepreneurs, coaches, speakers, consultants, and professionals with something valuable to offer. This is for anyone building a business around their expertise.
If you're an artist, you can use it too, if you're willing to think like a businessperson.
If you believe being good at what you do is enough, and that someone will eventually discover you; I already ran that experiment.
It doesn't work.
Don't waste your time - or your money.
What You're Building
Not followers. Not likes. Not viral moments. Not even the podcast appearance or the speaking slot. Those are just means to an end.
You're building a list of buyers you can sell to for years.
And, contrary to what you've been told. Knowledge is NOT power. Knowledge is potential power.
If you want results, you MUST use your knowledge. Then it becomes applied power.
The Five Pillars are List Building, Podcasting, Professional Speaking, Joint Ventures and Guest Posting.
Are you ready to stop waiting to be discovered and start owning an audience of qualified buyers?
If so, you're in the right place and I'll show you exactly where to begin.
